Frequently Asked Questions

Business cards remain one of the most powerful first-impression tools. This FAQ covers sizes, paper weights, finishes, design tips, lead times and pricing.

A business card is a small printed card carrying your name, job title, company, contact details and branding. It's typically handed to clients, prospects and contacts at meetings, events and networking, and remains one of the most powerful first-impression marketing tools.
Absolutely. Despite digital alternatives like LinkedIn QR codes, physical business cards remain a powerful trust and memorability signal, particularly in industries built on relationships (consulting, legal, finance, real estate, creative). The tactile experience of receiving a beautifully-printed card still beats any digital exchange.

The UK standard business card size is 85×55mm, fitting comfortably in a standard wallet or cardholder. This is the most universally accepted size in the UK and Europe.
US standard business cards measure 89×51mm (3.5×2 inches), slightly different to UK dimensions. If your audience is global, the UK 85×55mm is the safer bet for international compatibility.
Yes, square (55×55mm or 65×65mm), mini (85×40mm), folded business cards and die-cut shapes are all available. Unusual shapes stand out but should still fit easily in a wallet or cardholder for practical reasons.

Standard business cards use 350–400gsm card. Premium cards step up to 450–600gsm or use multi-layered (sandwich) constructions reaching 800gsm+ for an unmistakably luxurious feel.
Silk and matt are the most popular finishes, premium feel and easy to read. Gloss is more vibrant but can feel less sophisticated. Soft-touch lamination, uncoated and recycled stocks all create distinct premium impressions.
Luxury business cards typically use 600gsm+ card or multi-layered constructions, often combined with premium finishes like foil blocking, embossing, edge painting, spot UV or letterpress. They feel substantially heavier and more tactile than standard cards.

Popular premium finishes include foil blocking (gold, silver, copper, holographic), spot UV, embossing, debossing, edge painting, letterpress printing, soft-touch lamination, die-cutting and rounded corners. Each adds a distinct tactile element.
Spot UV applies a high-gloss varnish to specific areas of a business card, creating a striking contrast against matt or silk-laminated surroundings. It's perfect for highlighting logos, names or key text on premium cards.
Foil blocking presses metallic foil onto the card under heat, creating a brilliant reflective finish. Gold, silver, copper, rose gold and holographic foils are widely available. It's the gold standard for luxury and creative business cards.

Essentials are name, job title, company name, phone, email and website. Increasingly common additions include LinkedIn QR codes, social handles, business address and tagline. Keep it minimal, clutter signals amateur design.
Most modern business cards are double-sided, typically logo and brand visual on one side, contact details on the other. Double-sided printing only adds a small cost and significantly improves the design's visual impact.
Add 3mm bleed on all four edges, with critical content (name, contact details) kept at least 4–5mm inside the trim line. This prevents anything important being cut off during finishing.

Most printers accept orders from as few as 50 cards thanks to digital printing. Bulk runs of 250, 500 or 1,000 deliver progressively better per-card economics, 500 is the most popular order quantity.
Standard turnaround is 2–4 working days. Express and next-day business card printing is widely available, especially for digital orders without specialist finishes.

Business cards are one of the most affordable forms of branding. Standard 400gsm cards in bulk cost very little per unit; premium foil, spot UV and luxury 600gsm+ cards cost more but still represent excellent value per impression.
