Frequently Asked Questions

Posters are one of the most flexible and impactful print formats. This FAQ covers sizes, paper, finishes, design, file setup, lead times and quantities.

Poster printing produces large-format printed sheets used for advertising, events, retail promotions, decoration, education and exhibitions. Posters are typically printed on paper or card and displayed on walls, in frames or on display boards.
Posters are used for retail point-of-sale, gig and event promotion, exhibitions and conferences, classroom and educational display, films and entertainment, political campaigns, restaurant menus, in-store signage and decorative wall art.

The most popular UK poster sizes are A4 (210×297mm), A3 (297×420mm), A2 (420×594mm), A1 (594×841mm) and A0 (841×1189mm). Bus stop, 4-sheet and 6-sheet posters are also available for outdoor advertising. Custom sizes are also available.
A 4-sheet poster measures 1016×1524mm (40×60 inches). It's the standard size for bus shelter advertising and large indoor retail point-of-sale across the UK.
A 6-sheet poster measures 1200×1800mm (47×71 inches). It's used in bus shelters, mall ad-shells, stations and large retail environments, providing a stand-out 'large format' option without going to billboard scale.
A2 and A1 are the most popular sizes for general business use, large enough to make impact but easy to handle and frame. A3 is most popular for retail point-of-sale and event promotion in shops and pubs.

Most posters are printed on 150–170gsm silk or gloss-coated paper for vibrant colour and a lightweight feel. Premium posters use 200–250gsm card for more rigidity and a tactile, photographic feel.
Gloss has a shiny reflective finish that maximises colour vibrancy, best for retail. Silk has a smooth, slightly muted finish with great colour and low glare, the most popular all-round choice. Matt has a soft, non-reflective finish, best for posters under bright lights and text-heavy designs.
Yes, matt, gloss or anti-graffiti lamination can be applied to protect posters from scuffs, fingerprints and water damage. Laminated posters last significantly longer in busy public spaces.
Yes, recycled paper, FSC-certified stock and water-based inks are widely available. Eco posters look identical to standard versions and are increasingly chosen by brands with sustainability commitments.

300dpi at final size is the gold standard. For very large A1 and A0 posters, 150dpi at full size is acceptable since posters are viewed from distance. Always supply vector logos and CMYK images.
Print-ready PDF is the industry standard, with 3mm bleed, crop marks and embedded fonts. Most printers also accept high-resolution JPEG, TIFF, AI and PSD files.
Add 3mm bleed on all four edges. Keep critical content (text, logos) at least 5mm inside the trim line to allow for slight variations during cutting.

Most printers accept orders from a single poster thanks to digital printing. Bulk orders (50+ posters) attract significant per-unit discounts due to reduced setup costs.
Standard turnaround is 2–4 working days. Same-day and next-day poster printing is widely available for urgent gig promotion, retail campaigns and event launches.

Cost depends on size, paper weight, finish and quantity. A3 posters are very affordable; large A0 and 6-sheet formats cost more due to substrate and machine time. Always request a quote for your exact spec.
