Magazine Printing That Gets Read, Kept and Passed Around

Magazine printing works best when the paper, print and finish all pull in the same direction, and that’s exactly what you control here.

Magazine Sizes, Paper and Finishing Options

Choose A4 or A5, or enter a custom size if your title needs something different, in portrait or landscape. Print in full colour for photography and rich layouts, match brand colours exactly with Pantone, or keep costs down with black only.

Paper changes how a magazine reads and feels, so pick the stock that fits your content:

  • Silk, a smooth, low-sheen stock that suits most magazines
  • Gloss, for punchy colour and sharp image reproduction
  • Uncoated, a natural finish that’s easy to write on
  • Recycled, for titles with an environmental message to back up

Lamination protects your covers and sets the tone before a single page is turned. Matt, gloss and silk are the classic choices, soft touch adds a velvety texture readers notice straight away, and anti-scuff keeps dark covers free of marks in transit. For premium issues, add spot UV to lift a masthead or cover image, or foiling for a metallic finish that catches the light.

Standard turnaround covers most schedules. If you’re up against a deadline, choose express 5 day or express 3 day and we’ll print and dispatch your magazines in as little as three working days.

How to Order Your Magazine Printing

  1. Choose your material: silk, gloss, uncoated or recycled, then add your lamination and any extras like spot UV or foiling.

  3. Need a design? Our in-house team can create your magazine layout for you.

FAQs

What sizes are available?

Better Printing offers A5 (148mm by 210mm) and A4 (210mm by 297mm) magazine sizes as standard. Please note that these measurements refer to the size of the magazine when closed.

Custom magazine sizes are also available; so if you have a different size in mind, call us on 023 8087 8037 to discuss our bespoke options.

How are magazines bound?

Our standard magazines are bound together via saddle-stitching. This method assembles brochure pages by first nesting several folded double-leaf spreads on top of each other (starting with the middlemost pages and finishing with the outer cover leaf).

The brochure pages are then stitched together by threading lengths of metal wire (similar to staples) through all pages along the central crease line.

Better Printing can also print your magazine content in other binding formats if required, including perfect binding – simply get in touch to discuss your project requirements.

How many pages can my magazines have?

You can view our page count options in the table below. Each paper sheet (or ‘leaf’) of your brochure will have two printed pages (pp); one on each side of the paper. Magazine covers consist of four pages, and are included in addition to the page counts listed in the table below.

Looking for a different page count to the options listed here? Simply call us on 023 8087 8037 to discuss your own bespoke specifications.

Will my magazines be printed via litho or digital print methods?

The right print method will depend on a number of factors; including the product type, quantity and turnaround time you require.

Better Printing can produce your order on either litho or digital, with both available in-house. Our sales team can recommend the most cost-effective solution for your needs and will confirm your preferred method before going to print.

What materials are these products printed on?

Please see the Specification tab for more information on this product’s standard material specification. Alternative stocks and grades can be supplied for most products to help you customise your order – simply get in touch to discuss your print requirements.

How do I select portrait or landscape?

All magazines are printed in portrait orientation (with the spine located on the longer edge of the booklet) by default.

If you’re looking to set your magazines apart from the rest, you might like to print them in landscape format – this can be specified at the checkout stage if you need it.

What imposition or page order format should I use for my artwork?

We recommend supplying artwork as single pages in the same order as you want them to appear in the finished programme. Please avoid supplying your artwork in printer’s pairs or double page spreads, as this may extend production times of your print order.

How do you keep costs low?
Magazine printing costs can be very variable, depending on what goes in to create your periodical. We keep our magazine printing cost low by doing everything under one roof – from design to print, our team of experts are all situated in one place (in our factory in Southampton). As such, we don’t need to spend money on outsourcing – and those savings are passed onto the customer.
How do I get in touch?

Should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us or call on 023 8087 8037.
